For several decades now, Western Forest Products, in conjunction with volunteers, other sponsors and the Canada Department of Fisheries and Oceans, has operated and supported salmon hatcheries. For example, Marble River (near Port Alice), in operation since 1982, has released millions of chinook fry and many coho, chum and steelhead as well.
Western Forest Products has received several awards from the community and the Salmon Enhancement Program for its pioneering efforts in enhancement.
