Preliminary wildlife habitat interpretations for the Gold River study area were developed for black bear (Ursus americanus), black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus), Roosevelt elk (Cervus elaphus roosevelti), and Marbled Murrelet (Brachyramphus marmoratus) (Tripp et al., 1999). A thorough review of the habitat requirements of these species for certain life requisites (e.g. food, cover, nesting) and seasons of the year was completed and habitats within the study area were assessed on their ability to meet these requirements. The relative importance of the various ecological units to the project species was defined using wildlife habitat capability and suitability ratings.
