Howlal Creek drains northwards towards Alice Lake and has a basin area of 988 ha. It is estimated that 83% of the basin has been harvested to the stream banks with most of the harvesting occurring in the last 20 years (LGL, 1999a). From the Level 1 assessment, the stream is known to support all ages of coho, rainbow and cutthroat trout, and Dolly Varden.
Typical channel width is 10 m with an average slope of 2 to 3 percent. The estimated 50-year design flow adopted for Howlal Creek is 60 m3/s, corresponding to peak velocities in the order of 3 to 4 m/s, depending upon the location in the channel. Both design estimates and field observations suggest that flow depths of 0.6 m are not uncommon.
