Invasive Plants and You

Thanks to modern transportation, alien species may be introduced to any part of our ecosystem within days, or even hours.

These introductions, whether deliberate or accidental, are profoundly changing the face of flora and fauna around the world.  Although many of these exotic or non-native species cannot survive or are relatively benign when introduced into our coastal forest ecosystems, some plants have proven to be readily adaptable and invasive.  Invasive plants may displace native plants and the species that depend on them, impede forest management, accelerate erosion, or create other problems.  Locally, the day-to-day activities of human beings can accelerate the success of these alien invaders.

WFP is committed to preventing the introduction and spread of invasive plants by following measures set out in Forest Stewardship Plans (see www.westernforest.com/company/stewardship/planning.php).  You can do your part by:
  • learning how to recognize them
  • learning how to prevent them from establishing and spreading on your property and within your community
  • reporting and removing them at every opportunity, and spreading the word

The links below are provided in the hope that each of our employees, their families, and their neighbours will take up the challenge.

The list of invasive or weedy species to be on the lookout for in B.C. is long and daunting, but we believe the following species are capable of invading forested habitats and are particularly threatening in coastal climates.  Many of our operating areas are not yet infested and, working together, we can keep it that way.
