Mahatta River is located on the north end of Vancouver Island and drains an area of 122 km2, 60% of which has been previously logged. O'Connel Lake, located approximately mid-way along the mainstem attenuates stream flow and traps coarse sediment from the upper watershed.
Historically, all five species of Pacific salmon utilized the river. Today, runs of coho, sockeye, and to a lesser degree pink are supported. Steelhead and Dolly Varden are also found in the watershed.
The 50-year design flow is estimated at 475 m3/s. The bankfull width and depth are 30 m and 3.0 m respectively around the bend. The design velocity is 3.5 m/s and an allowance of up to 3.5 m was given for scour below the existing bed.
