Increasing forest productivity is an important part of sustainable forest management. Western Forest Products' Lost Lake Orchard and Saanich Forestry Centre produce genetically superior seed and stock for reforestation on managed forest lands. The tree improvement programs include developing pest resistant stock with improved productivity using traditional crop breeding techniques. Lost Lake Seed Orchard contains eight western redcedar, Sitka spruce, and western hemlock orchard, a yellow cypress cutting orchard and a hybrid poplar stoolbed. Saanich Forestry Centre maintains three coastal Douglas-fir orchards, two western hemlock orchards, one western redcedar orchard, one yellow cypress orchard, one Sitka spruce orchard and one western white pine orchard. As well, a cuttings production area and a "B" class yellow cypress seed production area are maintained.
