Tree Farm Licence 19 Sustainable Forest Management Plan

As part of the Tree Farm Licence (TFL) agreement commitments, the Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) provides objectives, goals and strategies to guide management activities within the defined forest area. The Management Plan and associated Timber Supply Analysis are used by the Ministry of Forests Chief Forester to determine the Allowable Annual Cut (AAC). The SFMP provides direction for the preparation of operational plans. The Plan is focused on results and outcomes so that the Licensee, Doman-Western Lumber Ltd., can evaluate performance and continuously improve management practices. The Plan contains measurable parameters in the form of indicators that will monitor the achievement of sustainable forest management objectives for the period August 1, 2001 to July 31, 2006. It is also intended to form the foundation for Forest Stewardship Council and Canadian Standards Association sustainable forestry certifications.

TFL 19, managed by Western Forest Products Limited on the behalf of Doman-Western Lumber Ltd covers 148,000 hectares of forests on the west side of Vancouver Island in the vicinity of Nootka Sound. Now in its fifth decade of operation, WFP and predecessor companies have responsibly managed the licence for its long-term sustainability. The TFL currently provides direct employment for more than 500 Gold River, Tahsis and Zeballos residents and is an important recreational and environmental resource in the Nootka Sound Region.
