Tree Farm Licence 6 Sustainable Forest Management Plan
As part of the Tree Farm Licence (TFL) agreement commitments, the Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP)
provides objectives, goals and strategies to guide management activities within the defined forest area.
The Management Plan and associated Timber Supply Analysis are used by the Ministry of Forests Chief
Forester to determine the Allowable Annual Cut (AAC). The SFMP provides direction for the preparation of
operational plans. The Plan is focused on results and outcomes so that the Licensee, Western Forest
Products Limited (WFP) can evaluate performance and continuously improve management practices.
The Plan contains measurable parameters in the form of indicators that will monitor the achievement
of sustainable forest management objectives for the period November 1, 2001 to October 31, 2006.
It is also intended to form the foundation for Forest Stewardship Council and Canadian Standards
Association sustainable forestry certifications.
TFL 6, held by WFP covers 185,000 hectares of
forests on northern Vancouver Island around Quatsino Sound. Now in its fifth decade of operation,
WFP and predecessor companies have responsibly managed the licence for its long-term sustainability.
The TFL currently provides direct employment for more than 1000 Vancouver Island residents and is an
important recreational and environmental resource.
