The community of Bella Bella is home to about 1,600 of the Heiltsuk people. WFP's development planning in the region, especially in the area of Ellerslie Lake, is of great interest to the Heiltsuk. Planning for Ellerslie Lake, an approved chart area, has been deferred pending further discussions with the Heiltsuk concerning their Quskas Tribal Park proposal. In the meantime, WFP is working with the Heiltsuk on a number of projects. More than 20 Band members have been trained in forest harvesting practices on Yeo Island.
Other projects include:
- Training in road construction, stream classification, silviculture and harvesting
- Watershed restoration, harvesting and silviculture employment on Campbell and Yeo Island
- Training and employment in archeological inventory, biodiversity and wildlife studies
