Staying Safe on Forest Roads

Back to community news

With summer in full swing and long weekends bringing more people outdoors, safety on B.C.’s forest service roads and in the backcountry is more important than ever.

Building on similar outreach efforts from recent years, members of our Timberlands and Health & Safety teams will be back out on select forest roads this August holiday weekend helping promote safe, responsible recreation. This outreach reflects our commitment to safety as a core value and reinforces a culture of safety that extends well beyond our operations.

If you see one of our road side tents, feel free to stop by and pick up some tips about driving on resource roads, fire prevention and backcountry preparedness.

Here are a few important reminders for traveling on industrial roads and enjoying B.C. forests:

  • Industrial Traffic Right of Way: Logging trucks and heavy equipment have the right-of-way at all times. Public users must yield and pull over safely to allow large vehicles to pass.
  • Limited Maintenance: Roads may be rough, steep or affected by weather. Maintenance is done for industrial use, not public access.
  • Speed: Obey posted speed limits. Drive slowly and with caution.
  • Active Work Zones: Operations may cause delays or temporary closures. Obey all signage and personnel instructions.
  • The Unexpected: Anything can happen, sometimes out of cell range or far from a main road. Motorists are encouraged to travel with a well-stocked emergency kit and spare tire.
  • Local and provincial fire restrictions: Currently, for the Coastal B.C. region, prohibitions are in place for Categories 1, 2 and 3 fires. This includes a ban on all campfires. www.bcwildfire.ca
