Coastal hem-fir is a combination of the pacific coast’s most abundant species, Western hemlock and Amabilis fir. These high-value species are virtually identical in appearance and share many performance characteristics, such as strength, stiffness, density, durability, and color. Hem-fir is not only valued for its beauty, strength, pressure treating performance, and overall versatility, but is also considered a cost effective solution compared to alternative species or building materials. With a fine, straight grain, consistent light color, and excellent staining qualities, hem-fir is an excellent choice for appearance applications, joinery, and structural applications that aim to highlight visual quality.
With its subtle coloring, freedom from pitch, excellent machinability, and high-quality grain, hem-fir takes stains, finishes, and preservatives like a pro. This combination of light color and ease of staining allows for the wood to be transformed to look like other high-value wood species at an economical cost.
For exterior applications, consider the following tips to ensure your hemlock products perform to the highest standard:
WFP PRO-GRADE products are manufactured as an appearance grade product with square edging and an ultra-smooth surface. All products will come with minimal to no wane, no decay or rot, and very little presence of splits or checks.
